Why Won’t My Phone Charge? 9 Common Causes and How to Fix Them

Few things are as frustrating as plugging in your phone and seeing… nothing. Before you assume the worst and start pricing up a new phone, take a breath: the vast majority of charging problems come down to a handful of simple, fixable causes. Work through this checklist from the easiest fixes first.

1. A faulty or worn cable

Cables take the most abuse of any charging component — bent, yanked and coiled every day. A damaged cable is the number one cause of charging failure. Try a different, known-good cable. If the phone charges, you’ve found your culprit, and a quality replacement cable is a cheap fix.

2. A dirty charging port

Pockets and bags fill your phone’s charging port with lint and dust, which stops the cable making a solid connection. Switch off the phone and gently clean the port with a wooden or plastic toothpick, or a short burst of compressed air. Never use anything metal. This simple step revives a surprising number of “dead” phones.

3. The wall adapter or socket

Test a different plug adapter and a different wall socket. Adapters can fail internally, and switched sockets are sometimes simply turned off. If you’re charging from a laptop USB port, note that these often deliver very little power.

4. A charger that’s too weak

If the phone charges but painfully slowly, the adapter may be underpowered — especially old 5W plugs paired with power-hungry modern phones. Upgrading to a proper fast charger often solves “it’s charging but barely” complaints.

5. Software glitches

Sometimes the hardware is fine and the software has simply frozen. Restart your phone — a basic reboot clears temporary glitches that can interrupt charging. Make sure your operating system is up to date too, as updates often include charging fixes.

6. Extreme temperature

Phones deliberately slow or pause charging when they’re too hot or too cold to protect the battery. If your phone has been in a hot car or out in the cold, let it return to room temperature and try again.

7. Wireless charging misalignment

On a wireless charger, the coils must line up. A phone placed slightly off-centre, or a thick or metal case, can stop charging entirely. Recentre the phone and remove bulky cases to test.

8. A very flat battery

A completely drained battery can take several minutes before it shows any charging sign at all. Leave it plugged into a reliable charger for 15–30 minutes before deciding something is wrong.

9. A worn-out battery

If you’ve ruled everything else out and the phone is a few years old, the battery itself may simply be worn. Most phones show battery health in settings; if it’s low, a battery replacement is usually far cheaper than a new phone.

Nine times out of ten, the fix is a new cable, a clean port or a better charger. Start simple, and you’ll likely have your phone charging again in minutes. Need a dependable replacement? Browse our chargers and cables.
